چکیده

The CotsBots are inexpensive and modular mobile robots built entirely from commercial off-the-shelf components. These robots provide a convenient platform on which to investigate algorithms, cooperation, and distributed sensing in large (> 50) robot networks. Each robot is small (13cm x 6.5cm base) and costs under $200. Each is equipped with on-board processing, radio communication, and a base platform for mobility. Software is written using TinyOS, an open-source, event-driven operating system for large-scale distributed sensor and actuator networks. TinyOS also provides a modular software environment where implementation details may be abstracted away from the robot application developer. Aed away from the robot application developer. A simple robot diffusion algorithm has been outlined to demonstrate the ease of using CotsBots for large-scale

Multi-level Reasoning for Managing Distributed Enterprises and Their Networks

In this paper we describe our experiences and directions regarding the management of multi-domain Enterprise Networks (ENs). Our views are (i) the management of the EN is a distributed problem-solving activity and (ii) recent results in automated problemsolving in the distributed artificial intelligence and robotics communities can contribute to our understanding, development, and deployment of...

An inexpensive, off-the-shelf platform for networked embedded robotics

Recent years have witnessed the proliferation of a new class of devices, commonly referred to as Networked Embedded Devices. Their increasingly low cost and small size make them suited for large scale sensing applications. Likewise, they could be appealing as a means to embed intelligent actuation capabilities into the environment, turning simple artifacts into networked robotic appliances. The...

Design and Development of ReCOPTER: An Open source ROS-based Multi-rotor Platform for Research

Selection of multi-rotor aircraft systems for robotics research is a trade-off between competing objectives. While Commercial Off The Shelf systems are fast to set up and provide a ready-made platform, they often lack complete documentation and have limited extensibility for allowing researchers to modify them for scientific work. Conversely, developing an aircraft from the ground up is labour ...

Design Of A Prototype Underwater Research Platform For Swarm Robotics

To perform under water robotic research requires specialized equipment. A few pieces of electronics atop a set of wheels are not going to cut it. An underwater research platform must be waterproof, reliable, robust, recoverable and easy to maintain. It must also be able to move in 3 dimensions. Also it must be able to navigate and avoid obstacles. Further if this platform is to be part of a swa...

Talking robots with Lego MindStorms

This paper shows how talking robots can be built from off-the-shelf components, based on the Lego MindStorms robotics platform. We present four robots that students created as final projects in a seminar we supervised. Because Lego robots are so affordable, we argue that it is now feasible for any dialogue researcher to tackle the interesting challenges at the robot-dialogue interface.
